<image:title>Blog - satya - truthfulness</image:title>
<image:caption>Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the second yama of the Yoga Sutras, satya, or truthfulness. Yamas are ethical principles meant to guide how we relate to the world, as written by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. They’re not rules to follow out of duty, but invitations into deeper alignment with self, others, and the world around us. Satya asks us to live in alignment with our deepest truths. It’s more than just “not lying”, but being honest in thought, word, and action. It’s about noticing where we’re out of sync with our values or intuition, and gently bringing ourselves back to center. Truthfulness isn’t always easy. It’s often incredibly uncomfortable. It may ask us to disappoint others, to let go of an identity we’ve clung to, or to speak up in situations where we’ve learned to stay quiet. But it also offers us something invaluable: authenticity. Integrity. A life that’s truly ours.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Books That Changed Me: A Reading List from My Heart & Mat - Revolution of the Soul by Seane Corn</image:title>
<image:caption>Raw, real, and deeply moving, this memoir-meets-manifesto blends the story of one woman’s healing with the teachings of yoga. Seane Corn doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff (trigger warning for abuse, trauma, and addiction), but she always brings it back to the heart of yoga. This one is intense, but powerful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Books That Changed Me: A Reading List from My Heart & Mat - Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer</image:title>
<image:caption>My favorite book of all time. If you love plants, nature, or the intersection of science and Indigenous wisdom, this book will feel like a homecoming. Kimmerer writes with such reverence and grace that it’s both poetic and scientific. I think every human should read it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I haven't always considered myself a reader, but it's a habit I've cultivated in recent years. Reading has become a practice that helps me make sense of the world. I find great joy in books that teach, challenge, and inspire me. Below, I’ve gathered some of my all-time favorites, divided into two categories: the books that shaped my yoga teacher training journey, and those that found their way to me by other means.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Books That Changed Me: A Reading List from My Heart & Mat - The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot</image:title>
<image:caption>This book blew me away. It tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells unknowingly became the cornerstone of modern medical research. It sheds light on racism, medical ethics, and the human cost of scientific advancement. Deeply important and eye-opening. This read will open your eyes to the woman who changed everything.</image:caption>

Its teachings are simple, but profound: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best. When I embody these agreements, I move through life with more kindness, gentleness, and peace.</image:caption>

Bachman takes the complex teachings of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and breaks them down in a way that feels both approachable and transformative. It helped me connect so many dots in my personal and spiritual journey.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Yoga is so much more than rolling out a mat, moving and breathing, taking a little rest, and then rolling out of the studio. Maybe you've heard that yoga extends beyond the physical postures to a way of life off the mat. Over the upcoming weeks, I'll be sharing some thoughts on the philosophy of yoga, starting with the Yamas and Niyamas. Let's back up a few steps and build a foundation. Around the second century BCE, Patanjali, a sage from India, took yoga to a broader audience by authoring a Sanskrit text called the Yoga Sutras, which compiled the ancient teachings of yoga into an easier-to-understand format.* This text contains what has come to be known as the Eight Limbs of Yoga, an eightfold path that serves as a guide to living with more awareness, balance, and inner peace. It begins with the yamas, ethical restraints or moral disciplines, and the niyamas, personal observance or disciplines.</image:caption>
